2011 Melbourne motor show: Honda slows hybrid charge

But CR-Z coupe can be an image changer.

A combination of limited supply and the dowdy image of hybrids has prompted Honda Australia to dramatically downgrade its sales expectation for the CR-Z sports coupe.

The CR-Z, which is starring on the Honda stand at the Melbourne motor show and goes on sale in November, was originally forecast to sell up to 400 per month when Drive first sampled the car at the global launch in Germany 12 months ago (link to RB story June 2010).

But Honda Australia senior director Lindsay Smalley says the petrol-electric hybrid, which will be priced at about $35,000, will now likely achieve around 60-70 sales per month.

"We are going to start with a conservative sales estimate because there is a resistance t hybrid technology. So in the first few months, maybe 60 to 70 per month. However, I am really excited about the styling of this car and I think it can snap a change of attitude toward hybrid.

"I would not be surprised if sales exceeded our conservative expectations."

Honda has been bitten by the public's hesitation over hybrid, over-estimating interest in the $29,990 Insight. Smalley said the low takeup of hybrid cars in Australia was due to a number of factors.

"There is resistance on price, there is resistance on battery life, resale is an issue for people. We need to overcome those elements to make hybrid work properly in this market."

The CR-Z combines a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and Honda's IMA system to produce 91kW and 174Nm. It drives its front wheels via a six-speed manual - a first for a hybrid - or CVT transmission.

The CR-Z will face competition in 2012 from the Toyota Prius C - shown in concept form at the Melbourne show - while further hybrid models, including Jazz, will be added to the Honda lineup of eco models that already include the Civic and Insight.

The Civic hybrid will be updated in 2012 as part of the next generation range. Honda is also introducing a new generation CR-V compact SUV next year.

Honda also announced pricing for its upgraded Accord Euro, which following recent form drops on price while rising in spec. The range now starts at $30,340 and tops out at $43,140, dropping from $31,490-$44,290. New equipment includes integrated Bluetooth, while fuel economy improves 4.5 per cent for the auto.
