Here in the UK about half of new cars are diesel and while they are much cleaner than they used to be, the technology isn't without it's problems. Particulate filters, dual-mass flywheels, turbos and injection pumps all have moderately high failure rates.
My last car was diesel and the common rail pump failed twice. One of the reasons I came back to petrol was for reliability (OK, I added complexity by getting a hybrid, but the Honda system seems pretty solid). |

A Golf TDI is $24k. The Jetta TDI is $23k. they aren't much more than a CRZ and they have a few nicer options than what we have. I love my Z but if I wanted MPG and comfort, I'd take the Jetta hands down.
I really don't think we need to get into a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of diesel engines on this forum though. |

My wife's car is a Jetta Sportwagen tdi. We average about 40-44 mpg with it. Not a clean at the tail pipe, but diesels are very efficient.
A while back, Honda was looking into gas engines that detonated with compression. The project never made it to fruition, though. |
