--------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hill Start Assist System Manual transmission model Hill start assist feature helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling on inclines as you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Depress the clutch pedal, and shift to 1st gear when facing uphill, or Reverse when facing downhill, then release the brake pedal. The brakes remain engaged briefly as you release the brake pedal. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I am reading this to mean the car is first stopped, foot on brake, gear shift in neutral. They don't say it above, but clutch pedal needs to go all the way to the floor before selecting 1st or R and beginning to release it. My HSA lasts 1.5 seconds max.

I have had the HSA work with out shifting to nutral. In my experiance if you do shift to nutral to get the auto-stop to kick in when you shift out of nutral you need to wait like half a sec to a full sec for HSA to kick in.

I am not sure wheather you need to have it in total nuetral before shifting into 1st. I thought it senced the incline and the hill assist activates according to the degree of incline but I dont know that for a fact. I have two hills on my daily commute one a fairly steep incline and one a much more gradual (but still noticable one). My hill assist only engages on the steeper incline.
I think I usually go into neutral 1st but I will try clutch in and in 1st tomorrow to see. |

Well I did some testing this morning and the hill assist seems to work no matter if you have the car in neutral or clutch in and in 1st gear. I think the car must have some way of senseing the incline and engages according to that (non scientific test keep in mind).
So I would think that if your hill assist is not engageing then the incline is not steep enough to make it work or there could be an issue. Bottom line if you have concerns take the car into the dealer. |

I have no troubles with HSA on my base 6mt. As GaZoom said make sure you push the clutch all the way in (you should do that anyways) and I will add to that in my expirience it is also a good idea to push the brake pedal down a long ways as well. You don't need to push it down much to hold the car but the only time I my HSA seems weak is when I only give a little push on the brake pedal. Maybe theres no relation to how far you press the brake pedal down but it could be worth trying since it seems to make a difference for me.

leave your car in 1st, with foot on the brake, pump it a little. works best for me.
