Default Maintenance minder

Hello everyone:

I've got an '11 EX that I've had for exactly one year today (Happy B-day LOL).

They told me when I purchased it that I should wait until the maintenance minder said 5% before I do my first oil change. Here I am a year later with 4000 miles, and it's only at 50%.

Now obviously I don't drive the car very often, or very far. Hell a tank of gas will last me about a month, often longer.

I've been considering changing the oil regardless of what the maintenance minder says. I've always been told that regardless of mileage you should change the oil at least once a year. I don't know if this is another of the old sayings that goes along with the 3000 mile/ 3month myth or not.

What do you think?

Exco

I believe it tells you in the owners manual that you must change the oil in a year no matter what the Maintenance minder says .

Strange. I had 5000 miles and 9 months on the car when my MM alerted me to A1 service.

When I owned mine, it just turned 4800 miles when it went from 70% oil to 60% oil life.

My record 7 yr oil change interval on my 91 Si was oil change and filter in 2005 and 2k miles later in 2012 before i sold it. yes. and the oil coming out looked new still after sittting in the car that long.

I still go on a 3k change interval and miles alone, who cares the year or date lol

If i change oil now in my 91 CRX, and never drive it after the change say for 8 years, there is still brand new oil in there right? Date means nothing, it is miles on the oil that matters.

oil has additives to stop it from foaming and many more, they stop working after a year or 2. And there is getting gas and water in the oil, so yust change it after a year!

I believe in the 3k/3month oil change and have done it religiously. It hasn't done any damage to any of the cars I've owned, so I just get it done. I pay $30-$40 per oil change so I just look at it as $10 per month. I purchased an oil change contract with my CRZ so I don't have to think about it much. Just take it to the dealership and they do the oil change.

lol. Oil is oil. There is oil in your shocks but do you change your shocks every 2 yrs. no. you change them when the leak and depressurize.

Antifreeze, get corrosive after so many years so it must be changed date or miles doesnt matter. but oil. OMG, oil in a un-run engine not being used is the same as oil in a quart...or sealed in your shocks etc.

So many people do not know this.

If you have a oil squirt can in your grandpas garage, it is still good after years and years...

Again, I will stand by the fact date does not matter, it is useage that matters.

If under warranty, go with the owners manual = When the minder tells ya or a year.. Which ever comes first..
