Just as a warning, anytime you modify your exhaust it is illegal, especially when you remove cats, and I'm pretty sure most mechanics won't do it.
If you have a friend with a welder and some spare pipe you can just cut off the stock cat and weld in some straight pipe. Or you can buy a new midpipe that doesn't have the cat on there. It will make a little difference in top end power, and lose bottom end torque. That's always the tradeoff. Also it'll make your car significantly louder. |

Not to be rude, but I do want the OP to understand the truth. It is NOT illegal to modify your exhaust, it may be in CA but in the rest of the country it is not illegal to modify. Dealers will even put custom exhaust on a new vehicle. Its not like the exhaust police will come after you if you remove your cat. BUT If you live someplace that does inspections and they do exhaust inspection you will most likely fail. Most exhaust shops will do any modifications you want since it is the car owners responsibility. They also make hi flow cats to replace the restricting factory cats.
AND YEP you can buy a down pipe anywhere legally and put it on . |

The CR-Z is an AT-PZEV (advanced technology partial zero emissions vehicle). If you remove one of the two CATs, you're still good to go at emissions. You just lose the AT-PZEV rating.
I have a Black Label exhaust and it's a steady drone. Throw in that P2R downpipe, the sound may be unbearable in the cabin. But, it will let the car breath better; the second CAT is choking the exhaust. More air = more pickup and better gas mileage.
