Default Wouldn't it hurt the engine?

Ive been driving my new crz for 2 days now and im wondering about the IMa system. The way it was explained to me was that when you stop the car the gasoline motor turns off and the electric motor powers the car until you take your foot off the brake and put it back onto the gas. Now to me thats the equivilent of starting an normal car and while its starting pressing the gas pedal. which would eventually ruin the engine of the car. Now let's say you have to take off in a hurry, i.e.: merging into high speed traffic from a stopped position. Wouldn't "flooring" the throttle like that right as the gasoline engine is trying to start damage it?

^ nope.. this is a proven technology that has been around for a long time. Along with other things, it is a drive by wire system. In part - why you may have a "rubber band" type of feel to your acceration.

No, the engine is fine. When Auto-Stop is in play, the gas motor is off and electrical parts of the car are being run by the 12 volt battery.

When you take your foot off of the brake, the big IMA battery will start the car, and if it's a rapid acceleraton, the IMA battery will continue to supply power which assists the gas motor that it just started.

Perhaps you could do a little search for how the IMA works and it will become more clear. There are many good topics on this forum.

Thanks man, and one other thing. When you accelerate with the CVT and sport mode on it seems like its not going to ever upshift for you. Im afraid to take it too far and hit the redline. Will it upshift for you automatically at redline or do I have to do it with my flappy paddles?

The drive by wire system is not going to let you override it.. Floor it and have fun while being safe of course..

Yes. It will upshift at the redline, at the most. I have a 6 speed, and trust me, it loves the redline.

Having owned a number of Honda's over the years, I can tell you that they love to be driven hard.

It might help to think of the IMA this way - many (most? all?) modern cars cut the fuel injection when you're coasting with your foot off the pedal/engine braking. So something external to the engine is making it turn, yet when you put your foot back on the pedal, everything's fine.

Similar deal with the IMA - it's just an external force turning the engine before the fuel's turned on. During operation, from the internal combustion engine's point of view, the force exerted is the same as driving slightly down hill.
