Default mods vs back pressure & ecu

So, I've been reading all the general info I can find on intakes and exhaust, and a big consensus seems to be for small (under 8 cylinder) engines the loss of back pressure negates any power gains. For some reason I remember a conversation w/ my dad when I was a teen, 1/2 a lifetime ago, and he was talking about his muscle car days and adding all the mods, only to find out from friends who actually got into racing later in life that again, he killed his power by taking away all the back pressure.

why is there so much conflicting info everywhere?!?!? (rhetorical)

Then, the other negative comment I keep seeing (lets forget about the back pressure for a minute) is that w/out modding the ECU to add more fuel to match the air, it's basically not worth it. I don't know enough about engines yet to understand backpressure, but the air-fuel ratio makes sense to me. I know the stock ecu can compensate, but it's probably expecting to adjust for a dirty filter or cold day.. I wouldn't imagine it has the range to fully adjust to a big increase in air flow. ECU tuning isn't an affordable option for our cars yet, is it?

Thanks for any help w/ this info!

read this thread.

would removing the exhaust expect for the headers and cats hurt?

and yes, tuning makes more of a difference to optimize mods but there are gains to be had untuned.

As far as tuning if you check out the boomslang thread

Found an alternative tuning solution for us!!

You could get a harness and AEMFIC for probably 600 or so. That's pretty reasonable. My next power mod will be a piggyback.
