I hear that noise also in the cargo area. At first thought it was some kind of static from the rear speakers, but i'm sure it is coming from the battery. If you look behinda you left shoulder there is an air vent leading towards the battery. The noise could be possibly come out of there.

OK I got the official answer, This is from the Service Manager of the dealer I purchased my car from :
I've checked with both: technician, and parts manager. The fan is housed in the IMA system, and it does operate according to the ambient temperature of the charging system. Therefore, it would not be odd for you to hear a buzzing noise at times from the rear cabin area, if the noise that you hear becomes louder, or operates longer than usual, please bring your vehicle in so we can confirm/verify the noise you hear. |

i saw in a video review once that the person complained that you can hear the fan for the IMA batteries turn on when you're cruising w/o the radio and it can be quite annoying...
sn: this was a pre-US release around the time where everyone was looking for the tiniest things to bash the CR-Z for

I just detected following situation this morning:
when i started the engine, the fan seemed to run at full rpm and keeps on running for approx. 10 minutes of drinving. I was wondering about that, as the outer temperatures is below -10°C, and it has been that cold for the last 2-3 weeks. So the IMA-Battery is aparently cold enough! ( during the last summer, i sometimes heard the fan running but i think that's quite normal) Nevertheless, when I started the engine again about 20 minutes later , i keep driving for 2 minutes until the IMA light started glowing! ![]() The fan ran on max. rpm until I stopped another two minutes later... When I started the engine once again, everything seems to be fine! No loud sound from the fan, no IMA light on... Has anyone of you discovered the same or similar problem? The dealer said, I should keep an eye on that point and come back for checking the system if the problem occurs again... |

In my experience with 10 years on the 2000 Insight and over one year with the CRZ, in normal operation in any temp/weather conditions you should not ever see an IMA warning light, no matter the amount of battery charge. The only time I saw an IMA warning light was when the Insight inverter died, but just about every electrical warning light came too. Inverter failure is catastrophic!!! And expensive.
I was going to trade the Insight for the CRZ, just forced my hand a month early.

There is a fan located in the back right. I tore apart my hatch and it is basically located right behind the right back light. There are 2 vents one that has a fan located on the right and a natural air that is located right behind the drivers head. Also, if you hear a high pitch sound that is your IMA batteries in the back xD
