Default DIY: Wheels Plasti Dip --> Paint!!

Ever want to paint your rims but were unsure about how it would look?
Oh, you painted your rims and dont like the color and its not easy to remove?
Tired of not knowing how to go about it?

Well have I got the solution for you!

Heres a short write up following a DIY for plasti dipping your emblems.
I thought it would be a great thing to share and not thread jack!
This was my first time EVER using plasti dip and spray painting my wheels lol!

Before I start, I am not help responsible for anyones outcome who try this at home. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! And sorry for the crappy phone pics, its all i had...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Materials:
- 4 cans of black plasti dip(Depending on what color you go with white may be a good alternative. This was just enough for 2 coats per wheel, you can do more if you wish.)
- 2 cans of krylon gold metallic spray paint(I used gold, but you can use whatever you'd like. This was enough for 2 coats per wheel, again you can do more if you would like.
- 1 can of kyrlon crystal clear
- 1 spray can holder/gun(this made life easier for me and my wrists. although I did end up getting a few blisters from pulling the trigger so much. damn fragile hands....)
- index cards
- dish soap
- bucket
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STEP 1. Alright folks, first things first. Get that Z of yours on some jack stands and get those wheels off! I didnt bother taking pics of this for some reason but i figure its pretty straight forward.

STEP 2. After the wheels are off of the car you'll need to wash those suckers up! Pour a few drops of dish soap into a bucket under running water. MAKE SURE IT BUBBLES! I only used a little dish soap since my wheels were fairly clean but did have a little brake dust.

Get your sponge and start massaging those wheels and cleaning them up. Make sure you get inside and out!

STEP 3. After your all done washing the wheels we have to dry them. I chose to towel dry and set them in the sun for about 15-20min.

STEP 4. Bring it over to your painting area wherever you decide that is. I did this in my garage with the door open for ventilation. Also painted a few feet away next to my car. MAKE SURE YOU COVER UP YOU CAR WITH A CAR COVER OR SHEETS OR SOMETHING UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR CAR TO HAVE PAINT ALL OVER IT!!! COVER ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU DONT WANT TO HAVE EXCESS PAINT ALL OVER!!! I HIGHLY ADVISE THIS!!!

STEP 5. Here is where the index cards come in. If you have been wondering how to paint the wheels without getting plasti dip or paint all over the tires, heres your answer. Put index cards between the tire and the edge/lip of the rim itself. Dont be shy with the index cards either, i got a pack of 300 from walmart for $1.37.

STEP 6. Time to plasti dip the wheels! Make sure the wheels are dry before you start! First I did a light coat. I did the face of the wheel first and then moved on to the back of the wheel/barrel. For the other side of the wheel i didnt not put in index cards. I just held the tire up and sprayed slowly avoiding the tire itself. Make sure you get all the little indents, lug/stud area, and behind the spokes. try to get everything as even as possible.

After you finish one wheel, carefully put it somewhere. When setting I set it down, I put it against the tire so I didnt touch the plasti dipped area. Try avoid having anything touch it obviously, otherwise when it dries it'll peel...

Let it sit for about 15-20min. I didn't waste any time so I just moved onto the next wheel while the first one dried. Keep repeating until you finish the first coat on all 4 wheels.

Step 7. By the time you make it back around to the first wheel there should have been plenty of time to let it dry. Go ahead and apply the second coat. I did a heavy coat for the second one. Again, try to get everything as even as possible. Repeat for all 4 wheels.

I chose to do only 2 coats, by this time i had been through basically all 4 cans of plasti dip. If you choose to do 3-4 coats that is perfectly fine, and I think it would turn out a bit better and be easier to peel later on if you choose to do so. Of course, have a few more cans of plasti dip if you choose to do more coats, more never hurts either.

After you're all done plasti dipping your wheels, its time to let it all dry. Have a cup of coffee, read a magazine, or watch tv. Theres a 3-4 hour wait for the plasti dip to dry. If you'd like, this would be a good time to do your emlems or lug nuts if you chose to do so.

STEP 8. Now its time to paint the wheels! I chose to do gold on my NSBP, thought it would go good Here i started with a heavy coat but you can start with a light coat if you choose to. Again, after you finish the first one, make you're rounds. Allow 15min to dry between coats.

STEP 9. Go ahead and proceed to coat #2(again, you can do more that 2 coats if you would like.) Here I did a heavy coat again. Its lookin good!

STEP 10. We're almost done guys! Time to put on the clear coat. BE WARNED! This is going to take a bit of shine out(that is if you chose gold but im sure its going to dull any color a little.) I went with 2 coats of clear here as well.

Allow 15-20min to dry. Dont mount the wheels yet! Allow them to dry completely which will take about an hour.

After an hour theyre safe to handle. MOUNT THOSE BAD BOYS ON YOUR CAR AND ENJOY YOUR "NEW" WHEELS!!!

By the time I got done with everything it was already dark outside so I had to settle for a crappy dark garage pic

Sorry if this write up wasn't all that great. This was my first and only write up EVER lol. THANKS FOR LOOKING!

Wow! Those look really nice!

How well do you think the painted plastidip handles being washed? I usually take a brush to all the brake dust on my wheels. Prob wouldn't try that on after doing that. Maybe powerwash instead?

The guys over at dipyourcar.com have a special rubber cloth that they use to clean their stuff with. Most of them say some warm water with a microfiber cloth or a very low PSI pressure washer.

Awesome! Glad you went with that color. Can't wait to see it. Are you going to get the glossifier for it as well?

I'm still a little sketched out about washing them. I definitely wouldn't use a power washer. Prolly just just gently do them by hand. After I saw that glossifier vid I wanted to go that route but didn't want to wait for it to be delivered. They look good though. Really glad I went with gold, matches nicely!
