BMW patents an electric turbocharger it is rummored to be used on a new tri turbo m3: Rumor: New BMW M3 with tri-turbo engine and 450 hp What do you guys think interesting opportunity source one when they become available to put an electric turbo on a hybrid car? I know people sell cheap do nothing boat blowers as electric turbos that are crap, but if bmw has made something that works well enough for their m3 then it must be the real deal |

That's awesome..
Like you say, if BMW patented it and is going to use it in an M class, I'd say it probably works. I've been thinking about how a supercharger for this car is sort of battery powered, as the torque to spin it partially comes from the electric motor. |

my most interesting thought on this is that since it is completely controlled by electricity and the computer then you could possibly load three maps: eco with electric turbo off, normal delayed low boost, then sport which could be all out. Even if it isn't good for a major horse power gain if it had this option and say the capability to produce an extra 50 or so horses in the mid to upper rpm range for sport it would be awesome.

I've thought on that as well and a supercharger would be the most efficient form of power for the car. A turbocharger would be purely running off the engine, and would probably give lower expected results to the naive (Percentage increase in power would be lower than expected).
