This was first talked about years ago around the time when the Tesla was dreamt up. The purpose is for other people to hear you, for example a blind person crossing the street, when your car makes no sound. Our car always runs on gas unless your stopped, so no point. Anyway, more recent discussions have been to amplify the sound of the electric motor so there is no weird mismatch.

I don't think it sounds nice... I'm sure it can be tuned to sound otherwise, but I don't see in having a loud car if your car isn't fast... its like bragging about having an exhaust leak haha

It's a speaker that plays a sound linked to your throttle. You can make it sounds however you want.

Yawn - only a Brit or an engineer would find that a fascinating subject to talk about!
I know its a safety thing, and that's important, but I think the title of the thread is a little bogus (pun intended).
The CR-Z is a cool car, but doesn't deserve the bragging rights of a Ferrari. Playing the soundtrack doesn't turn it into one, either.
You can change the body panels to make it look like a Ferarri, too, but you are still driving a CR-Z. And frankly, that's good enough for me!

My first thought was. Isn't that what horns are for?

My second thought was well maybe we can improve the species by eliminating folks too stoopid to look both ways before crossing. Then they brought up the blind issue and I started to feel bad....but not too bad.

On a more serious note. Are there any real statistics that this is a real problem or more of an imagined one.

funny. We were tearing into one of my buddies RX-7's and sure enough we found one of those crammed into the intake. Only thing is it must have been too small for the intake and managed to work its way sideways. No wonder the thing ran like ****.
