Default Installing Spacers - can I do it?

Just wanted some opinions on whether installing 20mm spacers on the rear wheels would be a relatively easy, pain-free job for someone who isn't very mechanically inclined. I have all the necessary tools though.

If the answer is no, where would i go to have them installed? I went to the local tire shop and the owner isn't very comfortable doing it.

Of course, I've only gone to one shop so far (due to time -- headed home from work)...

Opinions and ideas?

^ Depends on what type of spacers - Hub centric would be easy - pretty much plug and play - just need to ensure the right torque @ 80ft lb.

Yea, the local retail tire shops are in the business of selling wheels. Most will walk away from spacers with the exception of your local custom shops.

Here is a link to the H&R specs;

Its the same way as installing wheels. just make sure you torque them in right.

...a process made easier with the help of a friend who can hold the brake while you torque the lugs on the spacer. Just FYI

On some spacer designs - you will have to replace the wheel mounted studs.. Some say this is a better way of adding spacers to your setup. Depending on your skill level this might not be an option and if having a shop do it - can potentially be expensive.

As a DD, I feel perfectly safe with the H&R DRM and the local speed/custom shop echos that sentiment.

The retail tire shops do not echo that sentiment - but again - they are in the business of selling wheels.

But with that said - If your going to push your CR-Z beyond the limits of a daily driver and maybe a little fun in the twisties - spacers may not be the best choice.

I've used Eibach spacers about 15-20mm for the rear. Installation isn't as easy as I thought, as you have to remove the brake discs and stick the longer bolts on.

Any thoughts on this spacer (anyone use the brand)?
http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

They offer different widths, but just wondering if it is a "go for it", or a "stay away".

I only have stock wheels (for now, anyway) - and just wanted to bring the rears out toward the fenders a bit. No real reason, besides looks. But would prefer the wheels not part company from the car during a highway drive. Or is this a dumb idea?

Thanks (from a modding virgin).

STAY AWAY!!! These are not hubcentric so nothing but the lugs center them. Also they will not center your wheels properly. Not very safe. Also I think they only come in 1in 1.25in and 1.5in which is all way way way too wide for the CR-Z.

20mm spacers from H&R are the way to go. Easy bolt on, and perfect fit. They are hub centric on both ends. Center on your brake hub and they will center your wheels.

A 1in spacer would be closer to 25mm. I already rub lowered a bit with 20mm and 43 offset wheels until I rolled / cut the heck out of my fenders.

when you are installing your spacers also make sure to kiss your wheel bearings goodbye when you're down there.
