Default Metra Double DIN Kit - Opening not Double DIN sized? (Too small!)

Hi there,

So, I'm knee deep in my CarPC project. Was working on getting my LCD into the dash today. I decided to use the Metra double DIN kit 95-7879 to save a few bucks over the factory piece.

Well, it turns out the opening is too small for my double din LCD! Double DIN standard is 180x100mm. I measured and its roughly 7mm too small on both width and height! I'm quite disappointed.

Just to make sure I wasn't completely crazy I took a single DIN radio and tried to fit it through the opening with no luck.

So, as of right now I either have to grind down this plastic Metra piece so my LCD will fit, or figure something else out.

Quite disappointed....

I have a factory nav dash at home. I can measure that for you when I get home later and maybe that'll be different, but it's doubtful. Happy to check tho.

I'm in the process of building a CarPC myself. Are you saying that a standard double DIN head unit will NOT fit into the Metra 95-7879 kit? I don't understand how that's possible considering the entire purpose of that kit is for supplying a factory-fit mount location for a Double DIN head unit.

Please elaborate because I am a bit confused and have purchased everything for my project aside from the Lilliput LED LCD (which will be fitted into a standard Double DIN mounting bracket prior to being shipped to me). This type of information is a real "make or break" situation for myself because I have planned my entire build to a "T" and finding out that a standard Double DIN head unit isnt going to fit into the Metra 95-7879 (which it has manufactured to do just that) is really going to throw a curveball at my planning process if some kind of modification is necessary.

Thanks in advance.

I am not actually sure what you mean by it not being double din. It fits my double Din TV just right. Maybe because it does not use the trim ring that came with the TV and the Metra unit itself works like a trim ring it is giving you issues?

@Redefined - So you are using the Metra 95-7879 kit? That's what I was thinking... How could the kit NOT fit a Double DIN unit? It just doesn't make sense...

That's good to hear. I'm not so worried about placing my LED LCD into the kit anymore.

In regards to the trim ring, using the dash kit itself as the trim is a common practice and hopefully that is was the original poster was having issues with.

Thanks for some input Redefined!

@wizkid - What LCD are you trying to mount into the kit? Is the LCD made to mount into a double DIN opening? Or is it a standard 7" that you have modified to mount into the dash kit? The latter is the most common when it comes to CarPC projects.

Check out ByByte.com - they are the company I have ordered my LCD from. They place the LCD into vehicle-specific dash kits prior to shipping them to you. You may want to consider working with them if you are having trouble getting your screen to fit.

Due to the fact that Metra 95-7879 has just recently been manufactured, they don't carry pre-mounted LCD kits for the CR-Z just yet. I contacted them and they have told me to send them my Metra kit, they will do the mounting and return it to me. Personally, I find it very easy and comforting to go this route because if in fact your statement holds true, they will take care of the fabrication as I'm quite worried about cutting up this kit myself. They are very friendly and I recommend them to anybody!

Just thought I would offer up the advice. Hopefully you can work out the issue.

the factory dash kit is wider than the metra, i tried installing a kenwood head unit with my factory piece and there was a gap around the radio. I had to order a Metra piece that was a perfect fit. hope this helps.

Yeah that is weird. I have the Metra kit with a double din nav unit in it and it fits just fine. Sometimes you get a bad part. It happens in every industry. Contact Metra and get a new one

Greetings.

It seems that the problem is that, as everyone stated, the Metra kit is designed to be used as a trim piece without any trim from the unit to be installed.

Unfortunately the unit I have has it's "trim" built in, so the kit was almost useless to me.

Luckily I was able to modify the Metra piece to work for me.

The inside of the dash there is massive... I could fit tons of stuff back there!

Thanks for all of the replies!
